Branding cricket’s oldest national competition

With the rise of T20 as the leading attended domestic format an opportunity arose to dial up the character of the traditional 4-day format and celebrate the differences between the competitions, from a fan’s perspective.

The vision for the County Championship is to be revered as the most venerable domestic cricketing competition in the world, important themes that we kept top of mind during the creative process were: - Traditional & Timeless - English & Evocative (but not nostalgic)

We started with numerous explorations of the County Championship trophy; examining how best to make it work as a silhouette with ribbons adding dynamism and movement. Alongside this we made typographic investigations looking at sans, sans serif and slab serif options – this was a critically important part of the design process which would allow us to reflect the heritage of the competition in a contemporary context.

Through this process we were able to ensure that the visual language of the logo was hitting the mark and responding to the criteria set out by the ECB.

The logo lauched in April 2016.

“Designroom Sport have really delivered against the brief. We are delighted with the contemporary and quality design, which also nods to the history of the competition.”
